Experiencing the Trip of a Lifetime
By Bob Hasslinger
Early in 2011, I had the opportunity to meet a neighbor in
our park in Indio, California, Al Perry, who introduced me to the idea of
volunteering on an IDF base when I shared that I wanted to visit Israel.
Later that month, Al introduced me to Wes Walker of Hemet, California who
shared more of what Sar El is about and of his plans to volunteer in
November 2011. I convinced my wife that it would be a safe trip to visit
Israel and she reluctantly allowed me to leave on a trip of a lifetime.
Wes and I met at LAX airport and departed for Tel Aviv. We
met up with hundreds of other volunteers at Ben Gurion airport and from
there departed to our base to serve for two weeks. My assignment for the
two weeks was to "refresh" medical supplies necessary for the field for
the IDF. I worked for a gentle man, Mashiah, who encouraged us as we
worked our jobs. The atmosphere was light hearted, but focused on
accomplishing our daily goals.
I must admit, I was blessed to have Wes help me navigate the first few days as I got comfortable with the routine. Our Madrichot, Elisheva and Anna, were angels as they continually tried to make our stay as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. Each evening, they would share some history of Israel that was fascinating to hear.
The evening time was spent with the other volunteers
getting to know one another and sharing our reasons for coming. I
have had this desire since 2005 to come to Israel and see the land and
experience the people. My time with Sar El has been a blessing to me that
I will never forget. I am grateful for the opportunity and pray I might be
able to return again.
Thank you Wes and Al for encouraging me to experience an unforgettable vacation. I can now check off a special wish I wanted to do that was at the top of my "bucket list"!
Shalom!
