Dear Friends,
We started 2009 with a decision by the Israeli government to step up its defense of the southern areas of our country that had been under daily rocket attack and sniper fire for the past eight years. Our leaders acted humanely, and even warned the Hamas of what was to come. Israel launched a worldwide campaign to explain our intolerable situation, but the rocket fire and threats to our civilian population continued.
The Israel Defense Force (IDF) took action in order to stop the ongoing attacks on our civilians and to deter the Hamas from further arming its followers. Our soldiers acted decisively and bravely and took great care to try and avoid harming civilians in Gaza who were being used by the Hamas as human shields.
The IDF was well prepared for this offensive and did accomplish the goals it had set out to achieve. And for that, we would like to express our gratitude and congratulations on a job well done.
To you, our volunteers, we would like to express our thanks and appreciation for all of your hard work in helping the IDF prepare for this offensive. You have played a significant role in helping to prepare the necessary materials which were used during Operation Cast Lead.
Now that the fighting has stopped and a cease-fire is in place (which Israel declared unilaterally and later the Hamas joined), we are looking forward to peace and security for our civilian population. However, we also have a lot of work to do in order to help the IDF return to the prime condition it was in before the Gaza operation. I am sure that you will continue to donate your time and capabilities to help us in this endeavor.
