A Story from Howard Engel --
I volunteered for Sar-El because I thought working with soldiers would be an interesting way to support Israel even though I’ve never associated with soldiers before. Yet in Israel I worked alongside soldiers everyday, and we became friends. Together we worked on projects ranging from assembling satellite equipment to loading half-tracks. At times it was hard work, but from my very first day, I took pride in helping the soldiers. Eventually I realized that I was helping Israel to be a better country, and by my last day I realized I was also helping myself.
I’ve sent along a couple of pictures of me workin’ up a storm.
PIC 1: I’m on the trailer of a communications equipment truck, dismantling the base of a satellite dish. The work may appear complicated but it’s actually easier then it looks. Along with another volunteer and two soldiers, we took every piece of equipment off the truck, cleaned and oiled it, then reloaded it…all in about three hours. We completed two trucks a day which assured that there were always some trucks ready for immediate deployment if war broke out.
PIC 2: At a communications regiment, these are the kind of dishes I washed. Howard Engel |
