A Sar-El Experience by Jim Sloan |

In the winter of 2001 I made my first trip to Israel, I learned of program and knew immediately it was something I needed to do. I have a deep commitment to Israel and wanted to help. I was expecting to contribute but had no idea just how touched I would be. The work was fulfilling and I knew all the while it made a difference,. But the privilege to work with the brave young soldiers goes beyond what words can describe. I left with a deep respect for them and got to know Israel not as a tourist but as an Israeli, the programs are informative and I have learned so much. The relationships struck with other volunteers are priceless. I now know people how live in South Africa, Australia, Great Britain, Norway, Canada, The Netherlands and many have become live long friends. To say it is an experience that can chance your live is accurate. I have since returned each year and next winter will be my fourth trip. It is easy to go to Israel but so difficult to leave, the only thing that lets you go is knowing you will return to Sar-El next year to help again. I remember one young lady at Batsup 382. I was getting ready to return home and she came up to me gave me a hug and thanked me for coming back again, she said it meant so much to her and Israel. I had to catch myself for a second and replied, I need to Thank You because being able to come here and volunteer, you have given me more than I have given. I don't think any of us come over for any reason but to help and this is the best help anyone can give Israel and the IDF. There is no need to be thanked, it is important that we help and I am so thankful that Sar-El is there.
