Join an Archaeological Dig!

The Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) invites Sar-El volunteers to join a community excavation in Modi’in. Help uncover some of the secrets of the past!

Modi’in – Community Excavation

In cooperation with the Municipality of Modi’in, the Israel Antiquities Authority is organizing an educational excavation at Givat HaTitora in Modi’in. Students from municipal schools are participating, as well as various volunteers. Ancient Roman, Byzantine, Crusader and other antiquities have been found there. The excavation is taking place next to a Crusader fortress.

HOW TO GET THERE

By Car:

Arrival at Emek Dotan Street on the same corner as Ofek School

By Train:

Take the train to Modi’in station, then walk directly to the site, which is estimated to take 20 minutes—depending on how fast you walk.

DATES

The excavation began on April 10 and will last until June 10.

HOURS

Sunday-Thursday from 07:30-13:00, which includes two short breaks over the course of the day.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

The work area will be shaded, but Israeli summers are hot, and the work is physical, so this needs to be taken into consideration.

 

REQUIRED CLOTHING

  • Hiking boots or other closed shoes with ankle support that are suitable for the outdoors
  • Long pants
  • Full t-shirt (no tank tops or sleeveless shirts)
  • Hat
  • Sunglasses

 

REQUIRED TO BRING

  • Lots of water
  • Sunscreen
  • Food for the duration of the day
  • Proof of medical approval and insurance
